You can do all sorts of things with bicarbonate of soda (baking powder) and vinegar. For example clean a toilet (boring!), blow up a balloon (less boring!) or launch a rocket (let's hear more about that!).
How Can I Launch a Rocket with Baking Soda and Vinegar?
The Liquifly Fizz Rocket Kit makes rocket launching simple with the addition of the aforementioned bicarb and vinegar which you can usually find lurking in a kitchen cupboard! The kit even includes a measuring scoop so you can precisely measure the amounts of each ingredient for maximum fizz! It's quick and easy to assemble (just three parts) and can be used over and over to launch the rocket up to five metres in the air!
The rocket uses the power of neutralisation! When you mix a base (bicarb) with an acid (vinegar) the two substances react to neutralise each other. In the process a weak acid (carbonic acid) and a harmless salt (sodium acetate) are briefly created and immediately break down into neutral water and carbon dioxide gas. It is the CO2 gas that makes the fizz that launches the rocket.
This kit will provide hours of geeky entertainment and is a cool science gift idea for older kids (14+) or geeks who love to experiment at home. Order the kit as a Christmas stocking stuffer, birthday gift or Easter Basket filler and get the cameras ready to record rocket flying history!
